Tonight, we had the honor of being invited to a family's home for dinner once more. This student is in Obet's advisory class called Einstein which is his first period. The student's name is Nathalie, and her mother cooked a feast for us and her school friends. In the picture there is pancit, fish, and of course, no Filipino meal would be complete without rice.
The best part of the
night was the Karaoke party the students had, and we joined in on it! The family has a Karaoke machine and from
what Nathalie says, they sing together as a family all the time, sometimes all
day. After dinner the kids were singing
and trying to get us to join in and we did, it was a lot of fun! The coolest part about it was that it was
good clean fun, the students were all singing, laughing, and enjoying being
together at Nathalie's house. Her
friends came from all over town to have dinner and just hang out, and it was so
cool. It was so neat to see these 10th
graders having so much fun together and including us, their teachers, it was a
blast! How cool would it be if students
in America did that? This inspired me to
invest in a Karaoke machine for my future family :)
My key take away
from today is that Filipinos love just being together with one another, which explains
why for every occasion Filipinos come together at the same house and feast on
delicious food. It reminded me about how on New Years, or any big occasion, we would be invited to a family friend's house, and they always had a lot of Filipinos over and plenty to eat ---it all makes sense now! It gives Filipinos a great sense of pride to
be able to host guest and invite them over for a meal, I love that! I think in some ways I carry that belief with me, after all, if you ask any of my friends, they know how much I love to host a party :)
